Welcome to our Transition 2021 portal.

Here you'll find lots of important information to ease the transition to Kirk Hallam Academy over the coming months.

There are also some very important forms to complete. If you are unable to complete these forms in one sitting, then click the 'Save Forms' button at any time. This will save all the information you have already entered and send you a unique code via e-mail to be able to access it at a later date.

Your forms will be saved for 7 days from the time that you save them.



We are delighted and feel privileged that you have trusted us to look after the education of your child. The school is undergoing a number of key changes at present and we are so excited that you will be joining our community as we look to make Kirk Hallam excellent in everything we do.

Since joining the school in January every encounter I have had, be it parent, carer or child, has reinforced my belief that this community deserves an excellent school. I want to build upon the strengths that exist in the school already to ensure that, together, we can deliver a high quality provision. This is not a journey that I can make alone but I promise to leave no stone unturned in my pursuit of educational excellence for your children.

Delivering these improvements will come on a number of fronts:

  1. Creating an excellent culture. We will develop a robust behaviour system that is clearly communicated to parents and students. Within this we will work hard to eradicate bullying and ensure that staff and students are kind to each other.
  2. Developing excellent teachers. We will develop a strong program of professional training and development so that every teacher uses every minute of every lesson to improve outcomes for every child.
  3. Ensuring excellent results. We must make sure that everyone gets the results they need to have a choice over their future. Where students are falling behind, we will make early interventions to ensure they are not so far behind in Years 11 and 13 that they do not achieve their desired outcomes.

As part of Nova Education Trust our academy benefits from being in a strong partnership with several schools locally, many of which are rated as Good or Outstanding. We will use these links in order to ensure that your child gets a quality education. We are really excited about the chance to work in close partnership with you over the next seven years.

Starting secondary school is a very exciting time but it can be a little daunting transferring from a relatively small school to a larger one. Please do not worry-we are here to fully support you with your transition and will make sure you have all the tools to settle in smoothly, happily and quickly to life at Kirk Hallam Academy.

Many families have a lot of the same questions and concerns surrounding transition and we are committed to working with you to address any questions you may have. All of the key information you need as parents will be uploaded to this website for easy access. We also have a number of links to helpful videos for you to engage with which will help to prepare you for your move. Please keep visiting this website for updated content.

Absence: Guide for Parents and carers

What do I do if…

…I know in advance that my child will be away from school, for example for a dental or doctors appointment?

Unavoidable medical appointments: We expect pupils to be in school prior to and after their appointments. Medical appointments should not take all day. Where possible, appointments should be made before/after school or during the school holidays.

If you do wish to remove your child for an appointment, a note with appointment card should be sent to the Main Office with your child in the morning or you can contact the Main Office directly through the Academy number on 01159301522.

…I wish to take my child away on holiday during term time?

We do not authorise holidays during term time. If you do wish to request permission to remove your child from school for the purpose of a holiday, a form must be requested from the Main office or downloaded (see link below).

Parents/carers need to be aware that we will request a Penalty Notice for any requested holiday. If found that a student was removed for the purpose of a holiday without permission a Penalty Notice will also be requested, even after the pupil has returned from the holiday.

…My son/daughter is away from school and no prior notice has been given?

If your son/daughter is too unwell to attend school, please contact the Main Office on the morning of the absence. If you have not made contact with school to inform us of the reason, we will make every effort to contact you firstly by telephone/text and then by letter. A home visit may also be made by the Pastoral Manager-Attendance.

Parents can help ensure that the school has accurate contact details by informing the school if there are any changes to phone numbers etc. during the year. Please complete a Student Information Form which can be found on the website and return to the school main reception.

Q: How do I buy uniform for my child?
A: Uniform can be purchased online from JustSchoolWear. We also have a comprehensive section on the school website outlining our uniform policy.  In addition, the school will be holding a pop-up-shop 'Sizing Event' on 24th June 2021 between 4:15 and 6:15, Lakeside building. 

Q: How do I set up a ParentPay account (cashless payment system) for my child to purchase food at break and lunch?
A: On the first day of your child starting at our academy, your child’s fingerprint will be registered (if you have consented on the form which is part of the application process).  Your child will then bring a letter of registration home with details of how to add money to your child’s account.

Q: My child is eligible for a Free School Meal (FSM), how will the school canteen know?
A: Our Catering Manager has a list of all Scholars eligible for a FSM and loads the cashless system with their daily allowance which is available to students ready for the start of lunch. They will put their finger on the scanner the same as all children to purchase their lunch.

Q: What does my child need to bring to school on their first day?
A: They will need a bag and any specialist Maths equipment such as a scientific calculator. We will provide each child with a folder to store their work and a pencil case which includes the following items:

  • 4 colour retractable pen
  • Pencil
  • 15cm ruler
  • Rubber
  • Pencil sharpener

Q: My child will need to catch a public bus to travel to school, how do we find out details?

Service 11 is not able to serve Stanley Common in the mornings as the operator no longer has permission to turn the bus around at the Top Club. Students from Standley Common should meet the bus at West Hallam crossroads.

Q: What date does my child start school?
A: Monday 6 September 2021 is the first day for Year 7 Scholars (unless otherwise informed).

Q: What times does school start?
A: The school day starts at 9:00am Monday and 8:30am Thursday–Friday. Scholars are expected to be in school at least five minutes early so they are not late for lesson. 

Q: What subjects will my child learn?
A: Kirk Hallam Community Academy aims to offer a broad and comprehensive curriculum.  Subjects studied in Year 7 are as follows:

Q: My child is worried about being bullied at secondary school, how can I reassure them?
A: We have zero tolerance for any form of bullying within our academy, and can only deal with issues we are informed about.  Please see our anti-bullying policy and reassure your child that if they let a teacher or parent know if they feel they are being bullied, then it will be investigated promptly and discretely. 

Q: My child is worried about getting a detention, what is the behavioural policy?
A: Kirk Hallam Community Academy has a clear behaviour policy which your child will learn within the first week of starting our academy.  We aim to ensure that:

  • Positive behaviour is rewarded
  • Inappropriate behaviour is dealt with promptly, firmly, fairly and consistently

Q: My child is worried they will get lost trying to find their classroom, how will they know where to go?
A: During the first week of your child starting at Kirk Hallam Community Academy they will be ‘on-boarded’ which means they will be given all the information they need to know what is expected of them and how to navigate around the academy.

Q: What after school enrichment activities are available for my child?
A: Your child will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of enriching activities every week. This academic year, on a Monday, our Scholars choose an Elective and attend sessions provided by staff in areas such as Art Club, Music Club, Graphics Club, Animal Care and History Club. On a Tuesday, Scholars attend sporting and games-based sessions which consist of a mixture of activities for them to take part in that sit outside the usual PE curriculum. On a Thursday our Scholars attend a Civics session covering RE, PSHCE, and CIAG. Finally, Scholars are given the opportunity to work on homework and develop their ability to work outside of the classroom on a Thursday during our homework session. All of these activities take place within the school day between the hours of 2.50pm to 3.50pm.

Q: My child will be travelling to school on their bike, where will they leave it and will it be safe?
A: We have two bike sheds on site. It is advised that children securely lock their bikes.  

Q: When will my child receive homework?
A: We have a clear homework schedule for Scholars.

Pop-Up-Uniform Shop

Uniform can be purchased online from JustSchoolWear.  In addition, the school will be holding a pop-up-shop 'Sizing Event' on 24th June 2021 between 4:15 and 6:15, Lakeside building.  The 'Sizing Event' offers an opportunity to try on and order any uniform including blazers. 


Transition Days - update

Unfortunately, due to continuing COVID restrictions and following guidance from our Trust we have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel our transition days on the 8th and 9th July as previously advertised. Resources to support with your child’s transition to Kirk Hallam Academy will be available on the website by the 1st July.

Please note: Although we have the facility to store general medication (e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen etc.), we are unable to administer any medication to students.

We do recommend that with any medication taken on a regular basis, a spare supply is given to the school for use in case of emergencies (e.g. inhaler, EpiPen, migraine treatment etc.) Your child will be responsible for administering this medicine themselves.
